Eczema and Psoriasis: Why Manuka Honey Is The Ideal Solution

Posted by Cara Nye on

Millions of people globally suffer from chronic inflammatory and autoimmune conditions that have a direct impact on their skin health. Urban lifestyles quickly and easily contribute to increased stress levels, which can trigger concerns like Eczema and Psoriasis. Whilst there are many medications and skin care formulations on the market, they generally contain harsh chemical irritants that lead to side effects, creating a dilemma for those that already suffer from sensitivities.

Nothing beats nature’s safe, simple and effective alternative: Manuka Honey.

You might have used Manuka Honey for cold and flu symptoms, and its same therapeutic qualities apply to skin concerns. A unique and powerful antibacterial and anti-inflammatory, Manuka Honey has been used by our ancestors for centuries, dating as far back as 322 BC. In modern society however, we are only just rediscovering its immense healing properties when it comes to skincare.

Eczema

There are various types of Eczema, which is an inflammatory skin condition that causes itchiness and dryness. It is triggered by irritants, allergens and environmental stressors. Examples are contact dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis, dyshidrotic eczema, and the most common type, which is atopic dermatitis.

Usually atopic dermatitis is linked to staph infections, and Manuka Honey is effective at killing this type of bacteria specifically, whilst acting as a catalyst for healing. It is also safe to use on highly sensitised or cracked skin and open wounds, unlike conventional ointments and medications which can be dangerous.

Psoriasis

Psoriasis is an autoimmune condition that causes dry skin, itchiness and scaling, burning, swollen and stiff joints, thickened skin patches and nails, silvery scales on the skin, as well as extreme discomfort. This is due to the overproduction of cells at a rapid rate, causing a build-up on the skin.

Since there is still no real cure for this condition, many people suffer from extreme discomfort and sensitivity, especially if they have built a resistance to antibiotics. The underlying triggers can be stress, cold weather, injury, medications, infections or hormonal imbalances due to hereditary conditions.

Why Manuka Honey Is The Ideal Solution

Being a natural humectant with high sugar content allows Manuka Honey to attract and retain moisture, and unlike everyday moisturisers, in this case it is able to penetrate and absorb into the deeper layers of the skin. This soothes and prevents dryness, flaking and scaling.

Having strong anti-inflammatory properties, it alleviates irritated or inflamed skin, all the while repairing the damage caused from free radicals or oxidative stress. Hence, there is a visible reduction in the redness and texture of the skin.

Additionally, it is a natural and potent antibacterial and antimicrobial, particularly because it contains Hydrogen Peroxide and MGO (Methylglyoxal). The higher the MGO, the more concentrated and effective the Manuka Honey will be, making it 1000 times stronger than ordinary honey.

Manuka Honey also has very high antioxidant activity due to phenolic compounds, including flavonoids, phenolic acids, and polyphenols, that are intensively repairing in the deeper layers of the skin.

By containing a low pH level of about 4.4, it is acidic and able to rebalance the elevated pH levels in the skin that have resulted from inflammatory conditions like Eczema and Psoriasis.

Manuka Honey can overcome all of the hurdles caused by these concerns, by gently and naturally treating the underlying issues, relieving pain and discomfort, and improving the appearance of the skin at the same time.

It is also highly preventative, so you are likely to see long-term results. Because of its strong antibacterial action, it is able to slow down and eventually prevent the build-up of excessive skin cells. Whilst it can be consumed orally, it is important to use this active ingredient in the highest strength possible in your skin and body products so that your skin can also benefit topically.
